For day 1, it was held jointly with the 2022 ERAN Annual Meeting, and the Oral and poster presentation were conducted. All the oral presentations for experts were given in English. We received many questions from participants, such as how groundwater is affected by tritium. The "Student Award" was presented to students who gave the outstanding poster presentation at this year's poster session. Three students received the award, including KUROSAWA Honoka, a PhD student in the IER and Polina PAVLENKO, who has been accepted in the SATREPS Chernobyl project.
For day 2, in the symposium for the general public, six IER professors gave presentations on the theme “Environmental Radioactivity: New Frontiers”. We received a variety of questions from participants, both from researchers and the general public. Several questions were asked about ALPS treated water, indicating the high interest in the release of ALPS treated water from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. In the discussion session, all presenters were asked about their thoughts: what kind of thoughts led to their presentation.
Thank you very much for your participation in the annual symposium!

Director Nanba giving opening remarks
The IER holds an annual symposium every year to report research results to the general public and experts and to exchange opinions. The 8th annual symposium was held on February 28 and March 1, 2022, with the theme “Fukushima Post-Accidental Contamination ~Consequences and long-term trends~”. Although the event was originally planned to be held as a hybrid event on-site and online, it changed to an online event due to the spread of infections of COVID-19. We received a lot of registration for participation and a total of approximately 220 people joined the oral presentation for experts and the symposium for the general public.

In the symposium for the general public, six IER professors gave presentations about their findings acquired in the research activities following the nuclear accident in 2011. Participants asked questions such as “What do you think that the number of analysis samples is
limited?” and “Aren’t there any effects of the accident-derived radionuclides on wild animals now?” Many questions about tritium given by online participants suggested that people are very interested in the discharge of the ALPS treated water from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. At last of the symposium, all six presenters shared their views on issues that need to be addressed.
The poster presentation was held on the special website of the symposium. Registered participants can view and listen to 32 posters presentations with audio commentaries until March 31, 2022. We hope we hold this event on-site next year so that participants can directly exchange opinions in person with each other.
Thank you very much for your participation in the annual symposium!

The IER holds an annual symposium in March every year to report the research results to the general public and experts and to exchange opinions. The 7th Annual Symposium was held online for the first time in consideration of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Symposium consisted of two parts, a poster session and an oral symposium session, and was attended by about 150 people.
IER Director Kenji Nanba
giving a talk online.
The poster session was conducted by streaming of the presenters’ short talk videos online and posting the presentation materials on the cloud service. A total of 45 presentations on environmental radioactivity were made not only by the IER researchers but also by researchers from other universities and research institutes, and active discussions took place online.
The symposium was held on the theme of “Fukushima Environment from Chornobyl Perspective”, and six researchers gave lectures: Prof. Kenji Nanba (IER Director), Prof. Noboru Takamura (IER vice director/Professor of Nagasaki University), Project Prof. Alexei Konoplev (IER vice director), Prof. Vasyl Yoschenko (IER), Project Assistant Prof. Yasunori Igarashi (IER), and Project Associate Prof. Hyoe Takata (IER).
General discussion among presenters.
The presentations included a comparison of studies on dynamics of environmental radioactivity and health effects after the Fukushima and Chornobyl nuclear accidents, and an overview of the “SATREPS Chornobyl Project”, a joint research project conducted by the IER with Ukrainian research partners, and the research results to date.
In the general discussion that followed the lectures, the speakers exchanged views about what the current situation in Chornobyl suggests for the future prospect of Fukushima.
We would like to thank all the researchers and the general public from various places in Japan and abroad for their participation in this symposium and for their valuable feedback on our research and this event. Taking the feedback we received into consideration, the IER will continue to conduct further research activities and future events.

March 7, 2016 The 2nd Annual Progress Report Meeting
At IER, we will report the results of our research activities, conducted in the whole of the institute, to the public once a year. We held a Progress Report Meeting for the public for the first time at the multiple purposes hall in Corasse Fukushima on March 7th 2016. The number of participants was 204, every seat was filled throughout the presentations, including people standing to listen and watch the presentations. We found that many people are very interested in "radioactivity" and want to hear about what we are studying at IER. After the meeting we dedicated time to listen to the opinions from the public and answer their questions. It was a good opportunity to exchange perspectives, and IER researchers were able to hear directly the concerns of the public.
