Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) regularly holds the IER seminar in which the faculty members report on their research results, with the aim of facilitating their research activities and promoting communication.

On June 26, 1st IER seminar by the IER International Visiting Scholar Piotr KOPKA was held and attended by the IER graduate students and IER members.

In this seminar, Dr. Piotr KOPKA presented the summary of his research results and activities during the 3-month stay at IER. The main focus was to set up the WRF-Hydro modeling system on the IER computer and river discharge calibration of the WRF-Hydro model for Hiso, Wariki, and Haramachi monitoring sites of the Niida River basin on September 2011. This research activity is the preparation of a radionuclide transport model using WRF-Hydro to be developed by a joint team of IER, NCBJ, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for the Niida and Abukuma River basins. In May 2024, Dr. Kopka had intensive field activities to visit these monitoring sites, to collect surface water samples around Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), and to participate in the discussion with US undergraduate students at the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum Futaba during the Dr. Gusyev’s invited talk. In addition, he collaborated with Dr. Hirao to apply the ABC algorithm to the inverse problem for tritium annual releases from the FDNPP.

After the presentation, several comments were raised by IER faculty members.
