On April 13, 2022, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Japan visited the IER
On April 13, 2022, H.E. Mr. Pawel Milewski, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to Japan, and Ms. Małgorzata Schmidt, Second Secretary, visited us. Poland is in the process of considering further introduction of renewable energy and the construction of nuclear power plants along with related emergency preparedness for the future energy transition. Ambassador Milewski’s visit was made possible through an introduction by Ambassador Korsunski, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Japan, who visited our university last November. He first paid a courtesy call on President Miura, and then met with researchers at the IER.
During the meeting with President Miura, the Ambassador spoke that Poland is accepting evacuees from Ukraine, not as refugees, but as brothers and guests from a neighboring country, opening their homes and facilities. In response, the President told that Fukushima University had just donated the funds raised by faculty and staff to the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan the day before, and that he would like to continue to support Ukraine and Poland in the future. The Ambassador and President also shared the recognition that the arts play a very important role in disaster and humanitarian assistance, such as charity concerts and psychological care for children affected by damages.
At the IER, members of the SATREPS Chornobyl project, including three Ukrainian researchers, gave presentations on the effects of radiation on rivers, forests, and oceans, as well as on the predictive modeling of radiation risks due to the war this time. The Ambassador recognizes the need for research and professional development in the fields of new energy and nuclear energy in order to realize a decarbonized society, a common challenge for Poland and Japan. For this reason, he expressed his desire to support the establishment of cooperative relations between our university and Polish research institutions and universities.
