On February 28th and 29th, 2024, the 10th Annual Symposium of the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity at Fukushima University (IER) “Forest and Marine Environments in Fukushima now” was held at CORASSE Fukushima (Fukushima City) and online in a hybrid format. Approximately 300 people participated in total, both in person and online.

On the 28th, “Oral Presentation for Experts (in English)” was held, and on the 29th, “Symposium for the General Public (with simultaneous interpretation in Japanese and English)” and “Poster Presentation for Experts (in English)” were held. In the symposium for the general public, six IER faculty members gave presentations on “Tritium in the marine environment before and after the ALPS treated water discharge,” “Toward understanding radionuclide cycling in forest ecosystems,” “Regenerative agriculture and forestry in Fukushima,” “Elucidation of fish migration ecology toward the fisheries restoration in Fukushima Prefecture,” “Small amounts of radioactive strontium accumulated in small animals,” and “Anthropogenic and natural tritium radionuclide for numerical modeling of terrestrial water transit times.” In the subsequent discussion, all presenters took the stage to answer questions from the audience. Additionally, MANOME Yuki, a second-year master’s student majoring in the Environmental Radioactivity, and Polina PAVLENKO, a special research student (both titles were at the time), received the “Student Award” for their excellent poster presentations.

Comments from participants in the questionnaire included “I gained a good understanding of the historical and current trends of environmental radioactivity in forests and oceans of Fukushima,” “the dynamics of cesium-137 in forests were informative,” and “the presentation on the migratory ecology of fish was very clear and interesting.” Overall, the symposium was very meaningful.
