プロフィール

I received my Ph.D. in Physics (Radiation and Health) in 2021 from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Physical Sciences, University Ilorin, Nigeria. Currently, my research is focused on the radiocesium contamination of Fukushima forests and the associated radiation effects on the forest species.

研究テーマ

  • Study of radionuclides dynamics in Fukushima forest ecosystems post-deposition
  • Elucidation of the primary pathways of radiocesium migration in the typical forest ecosystems of Fukushima
  • Generation of monitoring data for the development of more accurate models for predicting radiocesium migration dynamics and risk assessment

研究概要

Motivated by the exemplary expertise showcased during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, I embarked on an exhilarating research journey in radiation physics, commencing with my MSc in Radiation/Medical Physics at Obafemi Awolowo University. My initial research endeavours involved conducting radiological impact assessments of soil, water, and food crops in industrial areas across Nigeria, laying the groundwork for my subsequent investigations.

My PhD research at the University of Ilorin significantly expanded the scope of my work, focusing on the far-reaching consequences of mining activities on environmental radioactivity. This research unveiled substantial elevations in naturally occurring radionuclides and background ionizing radiation within Nigerian mining locales.

Currently, my research agenda encompasses a multifaceted exploration of the dynamics of radionuclide transport, with a particular emphasis on forest ecosystems. I am also engaged in evaluating environmental radiation doses in both forested and adjacent areas. Notably, my research extends to the difficult-to-return zones established following the TEPCO’s FDNPP accident, facilitating a deeper understanding of the disaster’s enduring impact. Additionally, I am open to conducting collaborative research at sites in Japan and overseas, including locations within Fukushima Prefecture.

ひとこと

Contaminated with long-lived Fukushima-derived radionuclides, including 137Cs, the Forest poses a persistent risk of human exposure. This is due to the potential for radionuclides to migrate from the forests to adjacent agricultural lands through hydro-geomorphological processes, resulting in crop contamination. Extensive research has shown that the rate of radiocesium release from contaminated forests is influenced by various factors, including initial deposition density, watershed landscape and dynamic distribution of radiocesium within the forest ecosystem, which can change over time due to translocation between and within ecosystem compartments. These factors highlight the complexity of radiocesium behaviour in contaminated forests and the need for ongoing monitoring and research to mitigate potential risks to human health and the environment.
